Radio Astronomy
As a young boy, I have been fascinated by all things radio as well as astronomy. I used to look at the moon through my father's binoculars and try imagine what it was like on the moon. I spent many a summer night sitting outside on the "stoep" looking up at the stars. In high school we built a 6" telescope and spent many a month, polishing the lenses. They had to be polished in a certain way and our whole class took turns.
The optical side led to the radio side of astronomy and I read many books such as practical wireless, which had various RA articles in them.

STARBASE HICCUP!
For anyone trying to run starbase software and cannot get past the login screen, here is a possible solution. If you are running Kasperskyinternet antivirus go into the settings menu, then click on proactive defence. Disable this by unticking the enable button and EUREKA! starbase will now run normally.
More to follow............
The solution is to allow the Java.exe file through the security system. This is done by going to the proactive menu, then click on the "cardboard box icon", then under "exclusions" click on "settings". Now click on "trusted applications" and then "add", then "browse". Now browse to c:\windows\system32 and click on the Java.exe file then click "open". This will now add this path to the list. Close down all the Kasprsky windows and try running Starbase.

With the current solar activity, I am currently listening to the Martlesham 23cm beacon and taking a snap shot of the signal in 5 minute intervals. Not even sure if anything will show up on the signal, but one never knows. If it does, I can corrolate the info with other amateurs who are recording at the low Kilohertz levels.
I have also aquired an ETON G3 sw receiver ( below ),
which has a line in/out socket as well as an external antenna socket. Was
thinking of connecting the external ant socket to a long wire and the computer
soundcard to the line in/out socket for recording purposes. The radio covers
from 150Kz to 30Mhz. Perhaps a cheap way to get onto RA or at the very least
provide a portable receiving system. I paid a tenner for this one in pristine
used condition.
